Our research projects

In class this term we have been learning how to skim and scan for information.  Mrs Leaf had us ask questions about magnetism.  We wrote them on a post it note and then placed them on the big paper so everyone can see what questions we had as a class.  Some had lots of questions, some had none.

We then selected a question from the big paper that we wanted to answer, most of us chose our own.  It was good for those that could not think of any questions because they could select a question that someone else wrote.

Using our questions we would come up with key words that we would look for on the internet or in books.  These key words helped up to search for information that would help find the right book to answer our questions.  It was a lot of hard work, but it wasn't endless because we would skim and scan.  If the information was not in there, we moved onto the next book or webiste.

Once we gathered our information, we had to read it through, highlight, and write the key words.  Using the key words we would reread it and put all the information together in our own words so that it makes sense to us.

Our next step is to edit our work and organise it all so our work flows.  Then we can publish it into our own creative backgrounds ready for the display wall.

KEEP COMING BACK.  RESEARCH PROJECTS ARE ALMOST FINISHED.  TO BE CONTINUED ...

Rugby 7's visit Room 7

WOW!  What a surprise. We were lucky to have 2 rugby 7's players come into our class while we were learning on Monday. They came into our class and met us all.  Mrs Leaf didn't tell us they were coming in.  Secretly, we dont think Mrs Leaf knew they were coming in either because she was just as surprised as we were.  Whaea Emily brought them in and introduced us all to them.  They are family with Whaea Emily.

They had a quick chat about what they do and inspired us to chase our sporting dreams and to work hard in class to learn how to chase them.  We can not chase our dreams without determination and dedication.  We start by being determined to learn and dedicated to complete our work.  When we can master that, we can master almost anything.

We hope they come back for another visit and have a quick game of rugby with us.

Tessellations

Room 7 have been learning geometry for maths.  First we had to learn about rotation, translation and reflection.  Then Mrs Leaf showed us how to tessellate.  Learning which shapes tessellate and which shapes didnt meant we had to pick a shape and see if it can translate, rotate or reflect to make a pattern with out any gaps or overlaps.  I chose the hexagon.  It worked!  So we began to cut out pictures relating to electricity and atoms and made a tessellated pattern.

MATHS Designing 3D objects from 2D nets

At first we thought nets was something you catch fish in.  But then we realised what Mrs Leaf meant after she showed us how to design a 2D net to make a 3D object such as a cube, triangular prism, or one of the most difficut, a cyclinder.  Creating them took time, patience and good hand eye co-ordination.
Our cubes

On our cubes we drew and coloured some electrcity pictures.  On the sides of our triangluar prisms we wrote some information about atoms and electricity.

Circuit training every Fridays

As part of our PE we have circuit trainings every Friday.  We were lucky enough to have a representative from Sport Waikato come in to talk to us about our health and help us get started with our circuit training.  It is so much fun.

We have to do 6 different circuits activities such as wall squats, skipping and super quick netball passes to the wall for a minute.  After each activity we make our way into the middle of the gym and run for a minute before heading to the next circuit activity.  Once we have done all the activities Mrs Leaf checks to see if our face is red, that is how she knows we are putting in a big effort.  Most of us are huffing and puffing.

The man from Sport Waikato said It is important for us to warm down by placing our arms on our head to let the air into our lungs while we walk slowly.  Then we stretch.  I feel really good after our circuit training and it helps me to concentrate better on my maths work that we do when we get back to class.

Magics Netball Courtney Tairi comes to Fairfield Intermedaite School

Monday the 11th of May was an exciting day for us girls of Room 7 because we were given the opportunity to meet one of the Magics netball players, Courtney Tairi.  Courtney Tairi came to Fairfield Intermediate to talk to us about dental hygiene.

Most of the information that she gave us was things I knew already.  Informations like drinking water, not eating lollies, brushing your teeth twice a day.  Something new that I learned was visiting the dentist once a year for a dental check up.

Keep the recycling coming in - cans, toothpaste tubes, toothpaste boxes and toothbrushes.  The more recycling we do, the more points we get for team Puriri.  The more cans you bring in, the more chances you have for the draw.

Electrical Circuit

In class Mrs Leaf has been teaching us about electricity.  We now know when electrons move, they carry electrical energy from one place to another called an electrical current.   In this picture I am creating an electrical circuit.  For an electrical circuit to happen, there must be a current.  A circuit is a loop around which an electrical currnet flows.  We made a circuit by connecting copper wire to a battery then to a little light bulb and back to the battery.  We knew it was successful when our light bulb lit up.  If our light bulb lit up, we were allowed to gather some materials to see what conducts electricity and what doesn't.  Next week Mrs Leaf is going to teach us about static electricity.

Block Run Practice

What an awesome effort today from you all today.  Special congratulations to Kahu and Latrell who stood out from the rest by demonstrating individual responsibility for their own running by keeping a good pace, determined to get at least 5 rounds completed in 15 minutes and pushing themselves to their own limit.  Wednesday is your next block run, keep your fitness progressing by being active at home.  Ways to keep active could be:

Clean your room
Run around your house
Play outside
Mow the lawns
Joining a sports team
Playing an outdoor game with your brothers / sisters / friends / parents
Hang the washing out

(Yes housework is a form of physical activity that can increase your fitness levels - and your parents will love you for it)

BRING YOUR RUNNING SHOES on Wednesday!!!  It would also help to bring a plastic bag to place your running shoes into after your run - or you will have some smelly bags on your return home on Wednesday.

Ka rawe atu nga tamariki mo karahi whetu!!!  Kei te harikoa taku ngakau.

Indoor Bowls

On Wednesday the 29th of April room 7 went to the gymnasium so that Matua Barry from Sport Waikato could show us how to play indoor bowls.  I am not good at indoor bowls but Reign taught me how to hold the bowling ball and where to bowl it.

My bowling was not good.  The ball kept rolling off the green or wobbling to far.

Even though I was not good at indoor bowls I still laughed a lot because Reign helped me and he was funny.  Our class will be competing with other classrooms next week.  I hope our class wins.

Atoms

This week in class we learned about atom structures.  We now know that everything we can see or touch is made up of atoms.  Depending on the atom structure we can create different elements.

An atom is made up of a nucleas which has nuetrons and protons inside.  Surrounding the nucleas are electrons.  Protons are the positive charge and the neutrons have no charge.  Electrons are always moving around the neucleas in so many different ways.

The electrons can move from atom to atom, this creates electricity.  We will be learning more about electricity next week.

My recount of training with the Chiefs

At the end of Term 1 Mrs Leaf had us write a letter to the Chiefs.  I wrote about my life, my goals and my potential as a rugby league player.  Mrs Leaf sent our letters to the Chiefs and they rang her to ask if they could meet me during the holidays.

On the day of meeting them I was their water boy during their training.  Aaron Cruden introduced himself to me and asked if I would like to kick the ball to each other back and forth.  Of course I said yes.  I got a picture with him and an invitation into the Chiefs gym.  I really enjoyed the tour.

I felt very happy and priviledged to kick around with Aaron Cruden and helping at training.  Sonny Bill Williams told me I should go back.  One day I hope to go back as a Chiefs player.
